Davos is two destinations depending on the week. For fifty-one weeks of the year it is an alpine town reached over a low pass from Klosters, and the transfer is unremarkable. In January it is the World Economic Forum, and every assumption about the road, the access and the timing changes at once.

During that week the valley operates under access restrictions and security control, drop-off points move, and the drive time stops being a function of distance. A transfer booked for that week is planned differently from one booked for February, and the desk will say so.

The road

The A3 and A13 to Landquart, up the Prättigau to Klosters, then over the Wolfgang pass into Davos. The Wolfgang is low by Graubünden standards and is kept open; the alternative approach via Chur and the Lenzerheide exists and is longer.

Winter on this route

Open all winter and heavily gritted, because the town runs on it. Snow adds time to the climb from Klosters rather than closing it. SUV class between December and March, winter tyres from October, ski box from November.

Rarely, and rarely for long. It is a low pass on a road the town depends on, so it is a clearance priority.

Should we arrive the night before a morning meeting in Davos?

In February, usually yes. It converts a weather-dependent morning into a fixed one, which is the whole argument for the earlier car.
