Lech and Zürs sit above the Arlberg, and the access is the Flexen road — a piece of engineering with galleries cut into the mountainside that exists precisely because this valley is otherwise unreachable in winter.

It is the most weather-exposed access road of any destination on this table. It is also kept open with more determination than almost any other, because the resorts depend on it entirely. Both of those things are true at once, and a February booking should be planned with the second in mind and the first acknowledged.

The road

The A1 and A13 to the Austrian border, the A14 through Vorarlberg, then up the Klostertal and onto the Flexenpass road to Zürs and Lech. An Austrian vignette is required and is on the car before it leaves.

Winter on this route

This is the route where winter is the plan rather than a caveat. The Flexen can close on avalanche risk, sometimes at short notice and sometimes for hours. A departure is confirmed the evening before against the forecast and the road status, and moved then rather than on the morning. SUV class from December, ski box from November.

What happens if the Flexenpass is closed on the day?

The desk knows before you do, because it checks the evening before and again at dawn. The options are a later departure or an approach with an overnight break; either is agreed with you, not sprung on you.

Is the Austrian vignette and the Arlberg toll included?

Yes. Every road charge the route requires is inside the published fare.

Which class for Lech in February?

SUV as a default, Van for a group or for a full set of ski luggage. A ski box is fitted from November.
