St. Moritz is the longest-standing alpine run in this business and the one where the published drive time is most obviously an opening bid. In July it is close to accurate. In February the number that matters is not the distance but whether the Julier is open.

The Engadin is reached over a high pass, and a high pass is binary. That is the whole planning problem, and the reason a February transfer to St. Moritz is confirmed twice — once when it is booked, and once the evening before against the forecast and the pass status.

The road

The A3 and A13 to Chur, then up the Julier over Tiefencastel and Bivio into the Engadin. When the Julier is closed the reliable alternative is the Vereina car train from Selfranga at Klosters through to Sagliains, which runs through the winter and adds loading time to the journey rather than doubt.

Winter on this route

This is a winter route in the full sense. Winter tyres from October, SUV class from December, ski box from November, and a departure time that is reviewed the night before rather than assumed. Moving a departure by forty minutes the evening before is free; moving it at nine on the morning with a client already in the car is not.

Which vehicle class for the Engadin in winter?

SUV as the default from December, Van for a group or a full set of ski luggage. Winter tyres are fitted on every class from October regardless.
